How to Set Up A Classified
Advertising Campaign
After you make the decision to
start an E-Zine advertising campaign, you need to plan your Ad Campaign. An Advertising
Campaign can be put together easily following the general guidelines listed below.
AD CAMPAIGN
NAME AND KEY CODE
You will want to name your campaign and then assign a Key Code so that you can track
your progress. For this example, let's call our campaign "First Try" and we'll
code it "FT".
Featured Product or Service:
What are you advertising? If you have multiple
products or services, you will find it is important to develop separate campaign codes,
for each product or service.
Our First Try campaign will be aimed at getting subscribers for our FREE E-zine.
So our Featured Product is the E-Zine.
Campaign Dates
When are you running the campaign? Define your start date and end date.
Campaign Budget
How much are you going to spend on your campaign?
OK, that's the big picture. Now you need to determine which e-zines to advertise in. To
find E-Zines for your target market, start with the Lifestyle Publishing
Directory of E-Zines, a searchable database of ezines that accept advertising.
ADVERTISING SOURCES
Name of Advertising Source and Key Code
The publication you insert your ads
in is called the Advertising Source. Again, you will want to assign a Key Code to each Advertising Source so that you
track your campaign results accurately.
For example,
You place the same advertisement in 3
E-Zines for two weeks. You get great results. Of course, you want to know which E-Zine
produced the best results for you. Using Key Codes you can track your ads.
Track Your Ads by using both
the Campaign and Advertising Source Key Codes
Our First Try (FT) Campaign is comprised of one, 5 line ads, run in 3 separate E-Zines. Our Campaign Code is (FT).
If you placed advertisements in 3 E-Zines for this campaign. You would assign a unique
Key Code to each Advertising Source code also.
Example:
John Doe's Greatest E-Zine (Code=JD)
Money-O-Rama (Code=MOR)
Internet Millionaires (Code=IM)
So now you have two Key Codes: the
Campaign Code and the Advertising Source Key Code.
Using these two codes together, you
can track the results of your advertisement campaigns. Using the two codes together is
especially helpful if you run several advertising campaigns simultaneously.
How To Track Autoresponder
Inquiries
Autoresponder Tracking Option #1
Use your Advertising Campaign Key Code Plus your Advertising Source Key Code with your autoresponder like this:
For more information from our
autoresponder, send email to us at: ad@janedoe.com?subject=FTJD
When your readers click on the mailto link, the subject field will be filled in with FTJD, which will signify to you that your inquiry was
the result of your ad in the John Doe E-Zine (JD) and part of your First Try Ad Campaign
(FT).
Autoresponder Option #2
If you have many autoresponders available, you may want to create a separate autoresponder address for each
advertising source, to eliminate the possibility of removal of the code, from the subject
line, by anyone responding to your ads.
Request more information from our autoresponder at: info_jd@janedoe.com
(Ad with John Doe's Ezine)
info_mor@janedoe.com (Ad with Money-O Rama)
info_im@janedoe.com (Ad with Internet
Millionaires)
You can easily check your results for each E-Zine by counting the number of requests per autoresponder address.
You can track visitors to your web site from your ads using the same methodology and Key Codes. If you track your visitors
with any of the tracking software programs available, you would simply add the code after
your URL in your hyperlinked ad like this: http://www.janedoe.com?FTJD
When your ad campaign is completed,
you will be able to calculate INQUIRIES resulting from the Ad Campaign and SALES resulting
from Ad Campaigns. You can analyze your results further to discover which E-Zines gave you
the best results.
When you are developing your
Advertising Source Database, be sure to include these these fields to ensure your ability
analyze and refine your Ad Campaigns.
